Make Your Promotion Stick with Sticky Notes Advertising

Does your advertising strategy include sticky notes? If not, you could be missing out on a prime opportunity to attract attention and increase engagement with your product, brand or event. Sticky notes (also known as front page notes and popper ads) are repositionable sticker ads that work like Post-it® notes, and are typically found on newspapers, magazines, direct mail pieces, inserts and catalogues. Since sticky notes feature a repositionable adhesive, they can be applied, removed and reapplied anywhere such as a calendar, your cars dashboard, computer or any other place that the consumer wants to place it as a reminder of the advertiser’s message. The real benefit of sticky notes, however, is in their performance. Let’s take a look at the ways sticky notes can benefit you.

Quick Overview

Sticky notes can be used for pretty much anything you want to advertise. It’s estimated that more than 20 billion sticky notes are produced each year – the vast majority placed on the front page of newspapers. A common shape for sticky notes is a 3” x 3” square, however, they can be cut into more eye-catching shapes like a circle, heart, star or house. The ability to apply and reposition sticky notes anywhere is beneficial not only to the advertiser and publisher, but also to the reader since he or she can save the sticky note for later use.

Now that you have a better understanding of what are sticky notes, let’s find out how they can benefit your advertising strategy.

What Makes Sticky Notes a Compelling Option?

Advertisers often use a variety of mediums to get their message out, however, some ad types tend to go more unnoticed than others. In a recent advertising study, Goo Technologies and Harris Interactive discovered that newspaper ads were the least likely to be ignored.

There are different types of newspaper ads out there, but not all of them get the same results. Sticky notes outperform traditional newspaper ads with better recall rates due to their design and upfront placement that instantly jumps out at readers. In 2012, Research Analysis of Media (RAM) found in its study that front page notes have an overall recall of 60%; when it’s a coupon sticky note, recall increased to 65%. With large circulation rates, a recall increase of 5% could translate to huge sales increases.

RAM also found that 23% of note readers visit or contact the advertiser with 18% making a purchase. In cases when the sticky note was a coupon, visits to the advertiser went up to 33% – an increase of 43.5%. Not only were coupon sticky notes found to improve recall and visits, RAM saw that they increased purchases from 18% to 29% – a 61.1% increase. Needless to say, sticky notes (in particular, those with coupons) are far more likely to produce a better return than other types of newspaper ads.

Are Sticky Notes Right for You?

Your message and target audience are important considerations when deciding whether or not to use sticky notes advertising. For example, sticky notes are great if you’re trying to target primary household shoppers (e.g. moms and dads) since newspapers are a major source for coupons. Adolescents, on the other hand, may be harder to reach with sticky notes because they don’t read print newspapers as much as older consumers.

Once you’ve decided that sticky notes advertising is a good fit your message and audience, the next thing you will need to do is create a design. Sticky notes typically consist of several components:

  • Logo/artwork
  • Call-to-action
  • Shape and material
  • Contact information

A good call-to-action is a clear and concise activity or task that you would like the reader to complete, whether it’s using a coupon, attending an event, receiving a free consultation, etc. Your sales and marketing team should be able to help you fine tune the ad copy. When it comes to the actual design, working with a professional label designer can help you nail down the color, graphics and layout so your sticky notes can stand out even more.
